MAGNUS WIIK TRIO

Magnus Wiik - guitar
Erlend Albertsen – double bass
Magnus Sefaniassen Eide - drums

Magnus Wiik Trio plays original music and serves up a fresh take on modern jazz in the guitar trio format. With a broad and unusual spectrum of influences ranging from modern giants such as Mark Turner and Phronesis to the swing and more traditional sound of Errol Garner and Chet Atkins as well as traditional music, the group creates their own distinct sound. The core musical philosophy is centered on uniting the playful and odd elements from traditional music with a modern improvisatory mindset.

The trio was founded by Wiik in 2023. After having worked with Albertsen in Sanskriti Shrestha's Avatar he was a natural choice on the low end. Albertsen has a large range in his musicality, sharing many references with Wiik. Both had worked with Eide in numerous settings and his dynamic sensibility and massive rhythmic understanding made him a natural choice to fill the drum chair.

Magnus Wiik is known for his work on numerous acoustic string instruments through bands such as Open String Department, Julie & The New Favorites and Haley's Comet. He has worked with big names in Irish, American and Norwegian folk music. He hails from the jazz conservatory in Trondheim, and jazz has always been the centerpiece of his musical endeavours. He's been active with electric guitar trios more or less over the last twenty years, and documented some of this work with Magnus Wiik's Humdinger on their 2015 release From Rags To Britches, fusing jazz, country and rock. This trio is in some ways a sequel, but centered more on jazz and an improvisatory interplay.

Erlend Albertsen is an adventurous musician. With roots in jazz and hailing from the jazz conservatory in Trondheim as well, he has also dived into Indian carnatic music, leading him to work with musicians such as Sudeshna Chattacharya and Sanskriti Shrestha. In addition he fronts his own jazz groups such as Akmee and Erlend Albertsen Basspace as well as being highly in demans as a bassist.

Magnus Sefaniassen Eide is one of the busiest drummers in Norway, and always has creativity in abundance as a performer. He is part of the groups A Tonic For The Troops and elva isa, as well as in duo with David Skinner, and has worked with everyone on the Norwegian jazz scene. He hails from NMH in Oslo and is mostly active in jazz and improvised music, where he is a highly sought after performer.
